Claire stopped her car in the same spot she’d parked in the previous week. It was time for her therapist’s appointment, and she was filled with giddiness. It was a far stretch from what she’d felt the last time she sat outside the building, but it was progress. The weather was also treating the day better than it had before.

Claire rolled her window up and stepped out of the car. It was hard for her to stay patient and calm as she waited for the appointment. She was excited to tell Dr. Lundahl about everything she’d done to improve her mental health.

The receptionist, Rachel, was in her place behind the counter, and she smiled at Claire as the door opened and closed. “Good morning, Claire,” she greeted. “You’re looking great today.”

Claire took Rachel’s compliment with a grain of salt. She knew she didn’t look well the last time she came in, but she also knew that Rachel did not know what a happy Claire looked like. “Thank you,” Claire said, stepping up to the counter.

“Take a seat, honey. I’ll get you all checked in,” Rachel said. “Would you like some coffee?”

Claire nodded and sat facing the window and the bright sunlight filtering through the blinds. “Sure, why not?” Claire said.

Rachel fetched the Styrofoam cup as soon as she’d checked Claire in, her heels tapping on the hard floor. The irony in all of it didn’t escape Claire, and she smirked. Only a week before, things had been so much different, and the differences alone made her heart sore. I’m going to reach for the stars, Claire thought smugly.

Dr. Lundahl came down the hallway as Claire blew the steam away from her coffee, and Claire stood with zeal before her therapist could greet her. “Come with me, dear,” Dr. Lundahl said, sounding impressed.

In the safety of her office, Claire opened the window and breathed in the fresh air that gusted through the window before she sat down and relaxed on the couch. Dr. Lundahl retrieved her legal pad and pen and spun in her office chair to face Claire.

“So, I see you’re feeling much better,” Dr. Lundahl began. “Does that mean you took my advice?”

Claire nodded. “It was hard at first. But I did it with the help of my dad. The next day I wasn’t going to do anything else because I saw….” Claire paused, unsure if she should tell her therapist about her stalker. “Something startled me, and I was ready to go back into my shell again.”

“Did something change your mind?” Dr. Lundahl asked, probing Claire for more details.

“Yes,” Claire began, smiling as she realized her answer was exactly what Dr. Lundahl would have wanted it to be. “Noah changed my mind. His reaction to how happy and ordinary I looked when I went to breakfast that morning fueled my motivation.”

Dr. Lundahl beamed, an ‘ah-hah’ look on her face. “That’s great, Claire,” she said. “Have you continued using Noah to spur you forward?”

“Of course I have,” Claire said firmly.
